Arab Gateways
Arab Gateways: A resource for Australian students and teachers explores some of the history, geography, economics and culture of the Arab region. It promotes understanding of the cultures, values, beliefs and diversity of peoples of the Arab region.
About the project
Arab Gateways has been developed by Education Services Australia with a grant from the Council for Australian-Arab Relations (CAAR), which is funded by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT). The resource aims to enable teachers to promote between the peoples of Australia and the Arab world mutual interests and a greater understanding and acceptance of each other's cultures, values, beliefs and diversity.
The Arab Gateways website provides an online version of the printed resource book with accompanying DVD ROM sent to all secondary schools in Australia.
A teacher professional learning program to support the use of the resource will be delivered by the Australian Federation of Societies for Studies of Society and Environment (AFSSSE) during the second half of 2011 and early 2012.
AFSSSE professional learning activities
Official Launch and Professional Learning Session
The Professional Learning session at this event will help:
- build an understanding of the Arab region in general and Arab Gateways in particular;
- increase the capacity of teachers to effectively integrate the resource into their teaching; and
- provide opportunities to link the resource with the curriculum.
The Arab Gateways resource will be officially launched at this event and the event will be concluded with canapés and beverages. Attendees at this event will receive a copy of the Arab Gateways resource.

AFSSSE member association activities
AFSSSE member associations are providing a range of activities to promote the implementation of the Arab Gateways resource. Some of these activities will be in the form of workshops or discussion forums held at State and national conferences organised by member associations. It is also expected that some discrete professional learning activities will be organised. Dates and venues for these professional learning events will be published here as details become available.
