AFSSSE Discovering Democracy:
An Implementation Focus
This project forms part of the National Activities element of Discovering
Democracy, the Commonwealth Governments national programme of civics
and citizenship education activities. Through a range of activities, and subject
to agreement with DEETYA, AFSSSE will raise awareness of the Discovering
Democracy programme among SOSE teachers, and facilitate its implementation
throughout the states and territories. A national communication network facility
will be established to share implementation practice and developments with teacher
professional associations and classroom practitioners.
The Australian Federation of Societies for Studies of Society and Environment (AFSSSE)
contributed to discussion and debate on implementation strategies at the Discovering
Democracy Implementation Forum in Canberra on 3-4 September 1998. AFSSSE provided 23
participants as agreed with the Australian Curriculum Studies Association Inc, and in
accordance with the seventh deliverable in the DEETYA Services Contract. (Appendix 1)
This report summarises information gained at the Forum and has been placed
on the AFSSSE web site with a number of links to other educational sites. Copies
have been sent to the AFSSSE Board members, and their affiliate professional
associations. A short version of the information has been provided for publication
in AFSSSE member and affiliate journals.
