Information for Intending Contributors

The Social Educator is the official journal of the Social Educators’ Association of Australia. Its purpose is to provide a forum for the publication of quality material on the theory, development and practice of social education in Australia and overseas. The editor, Bob Hill, invites people who are interested in the field of social education to forward articles relating to their research or teaching, to be considered for publication in this journal. We are seeking material for publication in any of the following categories:

  1. Academic/research Papers (articles refereed – see below)
  2. Teaching ideas/teaching Resources
  3. Community education/interest Resources

Articles for consideration should be sent to Bob Hill (bhill@csu.edu.au) in electronic format. See Guideline for manuscripts below.

The Social Educators Association of Australia (SEAA) holds copyright for all material published in The Social Educator It is a condition of copyright that all authors include a transfer of copyright agreement when submitting articles. Refereeing Procedures for Academic Papers

Papers submitted to the journal will be reviewed separately by two independent reviewers drawn from a panel of recognised authorities among Australian social educators. Preference will be given to articles which are well written and which address the goals of the Social Educators’ Association of Australia or the specific theme of the publication.

Guidelines for Manuscripts

  1. An electronic format with text, figures, tables and charts in Microsoft Word and pictures in JPEG format is required so that copies may be forwarded to reviewers.
  2. For anonymity in reviewing, author’s name(s), affiliations, postal addresses, email and telephone numbers should only be on a separate covering page.
  3. Articles should be normally no more than 5000 words in length.
  4. An abstract of approximately 150 words should accompany each article.
  5. References should be indicated in the manuscript by providing the author’s name, the year of publication and the page number in parentheses. If several papers by the same author and from the same year are cited, a, b,c, etc should be placed after the year of publication.
  6. References should be listed alphabetically, in full, at the end of the paper, using the APA Style:
    Hutchens, D., (1990). Hooking primary children on Social Studies. Social Studies review, 32(3), 32-37.
    Kokiumbas, J., (1997). Australian Childhood. A History. St Leonards: Allen & Unwin.
    Malin, M., (1996). They Listen and They’ve Got Respect. Culture and Pedagogy. In G. Partington (Ed.), Perspectives on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education, 245-273, Katoomba, Social Science Press.
    Mok, M., (1994, January). Culture of New South Wales Schools. Paper presented to the 1994 International congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement, World Congress Centre, Melbourne.
  7. Figures, tables, charts and pictures (used only minimally) should be contained in the document, but should also be submitted as a separate appendix to enable the editor to format text for printing.
  8. Acronyms should be explained in full when first mentioned.

Manuscripts not conforming to the above guidelines will not be considered for publication.

Book Reviews

Books, curriculum material and resources relevant to social education should be sent to the editor, Bob Hill (bhill@csu.edu.au) who will consider soliciting a review for publication in the journal.
