Mission

SOSEAQ is a not for profit organisation, aiming to lead, support and advocate quality teaching and learning in the studies of society, environment and related fields, at all levels, through an alliance of educational and community stakeholders.

Vision

To promote and improve the quality of teaching and learning about society and its interaction with the environment at all levels so learners develop:

  • social and environmental understandings
  • civic competence

through learning and exploring:

  • knowledge and conceptual understandings from the social science disciplines and related fields of study;
  • skills and processes from those disciplines and fields of study that can be applied within rigorous social and environmental enquiries, based on high level thinking and collaborative practices; and
  • values that arise from investigation of controversial and challenging issues that promote socially critical thinking and an appreciation for the need to consider multiple perspectives

in order to:

  • make reasoned decisions;
  • seek preferred solutions to problems; and
  • take responsible action
for the benefit of personal development and the public good as active informed and responsible citizens contributing to more peaceful, democratic, just and sustainable futures for all within an interdependent world.

Resources

SOSEAQ (formerly QSOSE) received some money in 1999 from the Queensland Discovering Democracy grant money to prepare two booklets that link the Discovering Democracy materials to the new SOSE curriculum in Queensland. One booklet was prepared for Years 4-7 and the other for Years 8-10. Each booklet contains a matrix that enables quick reference to be made from the Discovering Democracy Units to the Queensland SOSE core learning outcomes and to topics that are currently taught in Queensland schools. It also contains outlines of two workshops that could be conducted with a school staff. The booklets should provide a firm basis for teachers to prepare their own modules of work that adapt the Discovering Democracy Units to the Queensland context.

The text of these booklets can be found at the following URLs:
